What's it all About?

What it means to be a Freemason

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest secular fraternal organisations and comprises a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values.
Freemasons follow three guiding principles, which we believe represent a way to achieve higher standards in life:
  • Brotherly Love: The qualities of kindness, understanding, tolerance and respect for the opinions of others.
  • Relief: Charitable giving and activities to assist the welfare of Freemasons and the community as a whole.
  • Truth: Aiming for a high moral standard.

What Freemasons Do

Freemasonry is one of the world's oldest secular fraternal organisations and comprises a society of men concerned with  moral and spiritual values. For many years Freemasons have followed three guiding principles, which they believe represent a way to achieve higher standards in life:

  • Brotherly Love: The qualities of kindness, understanding, tolerance and respect for the opinions of others
  • Relief: Charitable giving and activities to assist the welfare of Freemasons and the community as a whole
  • Truth: Aiming for a high moral standard.

It consists of men brought together for the sake of mutual intellectual, social and moral improvement. We do this  through participation in understanding and questioning ones self and  in ceremonial plays laid down by historical ritual.
  • It recognises no distinction of religion, rank, wealth or status and emphasises the duties of citizenship. Religious or political discussions are not permitted in our meetings.
  • It offers no business, career  or monetary advantages of any kind, other than self improvement.
  • It supports a wide range of charities, both Masonic and non-Masonic.

Under the United Grand Lodge of England, there are over a quarter of a million Freemasons. There are Grand Lodges in Ireland, which covers both Northern Ireland and Eire, and Scotland which have a combined total of approximately 150,000 members.

Worldwide, there are approximately six million Freemasons.
